So, it is your first yoga therapy session and you are unsure about what to wear. Fear not! Here is a breakdown of the best yoga attire, along with a few other important items to bring along with you to help maximize the experience.
The Best Yoga Clothes
It is recommended that you wear form-fitting clothing that allows for maximum mobility to your first yoga class, and every other yoga class thereafter. Tighter fitting clothing, such as yoga tights, bloomers, yoga shorts or a slim-fit T-shirt, makes it easier for your yoga teacher to see if you are performing the yoga postures correctly, and may help your yoga teacher reduce the risk of injury as a result of incorrect positioning. Tighter attire also makes it easier for you to invert without having to constantly adjust your clothing.
However, if form-fitting clothing makes you feel self-conscious, your yoga practice will suffer. The main thing is that you feel comfortable and are able to move about freely without restriction. Whenever possible consider making ethical and sustainable clothing choices that have less impact on the environment. Natural fibers, eco-friendly and recycled materials such as organic cotton, silk, linen, and recycled wool are great breathable clothing options!
If you are unsure about your yoga attire choices, contact your yoga teacher for advice ahead of the class.
What Else Should I Bring?
The right yoga clothes are the most important, but there are a number of other items that you may want to consider bringing along to your first class too. You will need a water bottle to help you stay hydrated, a non-slip yoga mat (many yoga teachers provide these), a towel and a post-yoga session snack. A banana is ideal, but anything else that is healthy and high in protein will be great. Remember to bring a snack, especially if you are someone who tends to suffer from low blood sugar. Most importantly, however, you will need to bring an open mind!
